Moving from a cot to a big bed is a milestone worth celebrating—but for many toddlers (and let’s be honest, parents too!), it can feel like a big deal. This shift signals growing independence, and with the right support, it can be smooth, empowering, and even exciting.

Here are some strategies to help your little one make the move with confidence and joy plus a round-up of the cutest big kid beds you can find in Aussie stores.

Tips for a Smooth Toddler Bed Transition

1. Talk About the Change Ahead of Time

Involve your child in the process early. Use simple language like, “You’re getting so big soon you’ll have your very own big kid bed.”

2. Validate Their Feelings

It’s normal for children to feel unsure or even upset. Acknowledge it: “It’s okay to feel a bit nervous about sleeping in a new bed. I’ll help you get used to it”. Using emotion coaching language helps children feel seen and builds their emotional literacy.

3. Keep the Routine Familiar

Stick closely to your existing bedtime routine (bath, stories, lullaby, cuddle). Familiar routines create safety. If you're moving the bed into a new room, try starting naps there first or playing in the new space during the day.

4. Add Comfort Cues

Let them bring their sleep buddies, blankets, or pillows from the cot into the new bed. These familiar sensory cues act as soothing anchors. You can even use a toddler-weighted blanket for extra comfort.

5. Use Positive Reinforcement

Celebrate small wins:

  • “Wow! You stayed in your bed all night”.

  • “I love how brave you were hopping into your new bed”. You can even use a sticker chart if they love visual praise systems.

6. Offer Choices

Let them choose their bedding, a bed frame, or even which bedtime story they want for their “first big bed night.” Giving them autonomy builds confidence and buy-in.

7. Safety First

Make sure the new bed is low to the ground or has guard rails. Consider placing a soft mat or rug on the floor just in case. And yes, baby-proofing still matters even for big kids.
